The winners of the 2020 American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Student Heritage Awards were named Saturday night (February 27) during a virtual presentation. Three student filmmakers were chosen for demonstrating exceptional cinematography skills in their submitted work.
ASC cinematographers Paul Atkins, Tommy Maddox-Upshaw and David Stockton presented the awards alongside ASC President Stephen Lighthill, Student Awards Co-Chairs Craig Kief and Armando Salas, and Sony’s Manager of Digital Cinema Camera Sales and Business Development Daniel Perry. The writer-producer-director will be honored during the 35th Annual ASC Awards on April 18, which will be live streamed from the ASC Clubhouse in Hollywood.

The Society bestows the ASC Board of Governors Award to filmmakers for their significant and indelible contributions to cinema through their body of work. It is the only ASC Award not given to a cinematographer and is reserved for industry stalwarts who have been champions for directors of photography and the visual art form. This year, the award is sponsored by Picture Shop, a Streamland Media company.

The American Society of Cinematographers will present its 2021 Board of Governors Award to director Sofia Coppola, the ASC announced on Thursday.
The award, the only ASC honor not to go to a cinematographer, is given to a filmmaker who is a champion of cinematographers and has made “significant and indelible” contributions to cinema.
Past winners of the Board of Governors Award have included Werner Herzog, Jeff Bridges, Angelina Jolie, Denzel Washington, Ridley Scott and Barbra Streisand. Coppola’s father, Francis Ford Coppola, received the award in 1998.

Back in the now-halcyon days of October 2019, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled a revamped streaming service so that its members an increasingly far-flung group, as more and more international filmmakers have been recruited to join would have easy access to Oscar contenders without having to search out official screenings or even venture into actual movie theaters.
