Municipal elections on April 4th will decide four seats on the Galesburg City Council in addition to other town councils and school boards. WGIL has learned from Galesburg Election Commission Director Lisa Watson that the window to withdraw from the ballot has passed. Only one candidate that initially submitted petitions to run has pulled out; that's Jayme Carr running in Ward 1. That leaves incumbent Bradley Hix running against Stephen "Champ" Coleman in Ward 1. Ward 3 will feature the lone three-way race with incumbent Kevin Wallace being challenged by Evan Miller and Thomas Roberts. Ward 5 will be a contest between incumbent Jaclyn Smith-Esters and Heather Ziegler Acerra and Ward 7 will be between incumbent Larry Cox and challenger Steve Cheesman. Early voting starts on Feb. 23, the same day that vote-by-mail ballots will start to be sent to voters. ....

Galesburg Council considering facade grants, lawsuit settlements, and community center master plan on Monday

Galesburg Aldermen on Monday night can approve TIF funds to provide assistance to Iron Spike Brewing Company and The Bar 65 in facade improvements. The Facade Advisory Committee has recommended Iron Spike for a facade grant agreement with the city. The proposed project would replace the windows of the building with tuckpointing and water-repellant brick sealer. The estimated total project cost is $151,000 and they are eligible for up to $40,000 in grants or about 26 percent of the cost. Another facade grant agreement that could be approved would be with The Bar 65 on Cherry St. Their project would include tuckpointing, adding a rear exit door, replacing second-story windows, adding a wall sign behind the rear door, new gutters, and painting the rear facade. The Bar 65's goal is to use the 2nd floor of their building. The total project is $44,000 and they are eligible for up to $22,000 in grants from the city.
