The Record and NorthJersey.com won 35 awards in the New Jersey Press Association s annual Better Newspaper Contest, including top honors for extensive coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic in New Jersey.
Singled out was the Loved and Lost series, a statewide media collaboration with the Center for Cooperative Media at Montclair State University that set out to name and celebrate the life of every New Jersey resident lost to COVID-19. That was recognized with a first-place Innovation Award.
Photographers Amy Newman and Michael Karas won first-place awards for their photos and video of the Madonna Multinational Home for Funerals in Passaic, depicting its struggles as it was overwhelmed by COVID-19 funerals. Newman also won the NJPA s Best of Show award for her photos of the funeral home.
