Robert Schollie tells us in a letter to the editor (“What’s in a name?” SP April 17, 2021) that he has “not delved into how the colonists acquired the land” and that he believes the Temperance Colonists “had every right to set up their settlement as they saw fit.”
He then whines about “cancel culture” as if it’s a new thing. Cancel culture has been operating ever since the hidden and missing parts of our collective history were consciously omitted to aggrandize certain people and their actions in ways that affirmed and applauded their behaviour, elevating them as noble persons. “Erasure culture” is a better term to describe the colonization that took place. ....

A Saskatoon woman wants the name of a city street changed.
Stephanie Danyluk says McPherson Avenue is named after a man who is responsible for colonial policy decisions that negatively impacted local Métis people.
Sir David MacPherson served as the federal minister of interior during the 1880s. He retired from that post in 1885, charged with incapacity in dealing with the Northwest Rebellion, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica. ....
