local democracy? As Robin Williams famously quipped,
“Politicians should wear sponsor jackets, like NASCAR

Council hopefuls pledge to spark interest in local body politics

Andy Asquith, the highest polling unsuccessful council candidate at the 2019 election, said the council wasn’t visible or transparent enough in its work. He promised to hold regular meetings for people to discuss issues with him.
He advocates each councillor representing an area of the city in which they don t live, and would like “fundamental reform” for how rates are levied.
Green Party-endorsed candidate Vanessa Rozenberg highlighted the climate crisis and social housing as important issues.
Participation in civic matters needed improving and the council needed to be visible.
Stefan Speller said people were regularly taking tumbles on city footpaths and they needed to be brought up to standard. He would also like to see more family- and pet-friendly spaces in the city. ....

Former MP stands in a field of 11 for Palmerston North council seat

He said he had the experience in politics to make a difference on the council and for Palmerston North.
The current council, with several Labour and Green Party members, needed balance and a strong, conservative voice, he said.
Ball said the current council had made many “nanny state” decisions that should have been challenged.
He pointed to “kicking out” the Defence Forum expo from the heart of New Zealand’s defence community, the likely banning of vaping in smokefree areas and attempts to force bars to close earlier.
He said his parliamentary skills were transferrable to local government and he still had the contacts in central government to be an effective advocate for the city. ....
