It begins, quietly enough, with in-demand graphic artist Carter James ( Mr Robot’s Joey Bada$$) awaking from a “sleepover” and eager to get back to his beloved dog Jeter. Delayed by some requisite good-natured banter after his bedmate Perri (Zaria Simone) accuses him of attempting to ghost her, Carter emerges onto the street below and almost immediately collides with a fellow pedestrian carrying a coffee. Apologising for his tunnel vision, the matter seems resolved, until up steps Officer Merk (Welsh Watchmen actor Andrew Howard). Seemingly perturbed by what he’s seen, Merk then gets more agitated by what Carter is smoking. “Is that a cigarette? It doesn’t smell like a cigarette.” Spying the roll of cash – payment for a recent job – that has dropped out of his bag, Merk now accuses Carter of being a drug dealer, ordering him to hand over his belongings.
