Friends remember Talaya Thomas as 'bright light' who made Steamboat a better place to live

Talaya Thomas (Photo by John F. Russell) As her friends in Steamboat Springs struggle with the news of Talaya Thomas’ death, they are fondly remembering the woman who inspired them and positively impacted the community with her strong, authentic and magnetic spirit. “It’s just so hard to put into words or summarize the impacts that she made,” said Holly Dickhausen, friend and owner of Rakta Hot Yoga. “I would definitely just want to focus on what a devoted and amazing mother she was and just her authenticity and her way of seeing people as they are.” Thomas, 44, died June 28 of complications from an asthma attack in Costa Rica, where she had been living since December.

Steamboat Mountain School mixes inside and outdoor learning

Steamboat Mountain School teaches life lessons inside and outside the classroom Outdoor adventure, community service and recreational skiing/snowboarding teach students valuable lessons about themselves and the world around them. Author: Byron Reed Updated: 7:43 AM MDT April 30, 2021 STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. Steamboat Mountain School is an independent college preparatory boarding and day school that challenges students in both academics and unique learning programs outside the classroom. The co-educational school was founded in 1957 by Lowell Whiteman, who wanted to combine a rigorous academic curriculum with outdoor learning experiences.  “His real passion was getting kids into the out of doors and getting them to have these amazing experiences,” said Head of School Meg Morse. “Our students leave here with great time management skills because they had to work on that balance.”

Letter: Jim Linville was a teacher of light

Routt County lost a really bright light this week in Jim Linville, lifelong educator, mountaineer, hero, environmentalist, world traveler, human communicator and philosopher. Recently, challenges have galloped ahead of our human ability to cope, and not everyone behaved or reacted well. We could really use more Jim Linvilles in these complicated times. Jim could help those around him learn to persevere through challenges with a smile, to see beauty everywhere, in nature and in each other. He observed, listened; he was kind, he sought to understand. He assumed he had something to learn, and he brought people along. Isn’t that the true definition of a leader?
