To meet the shortfall in the GST compensation fund, the Centre has borrowed and released to states Rs 1.1 lakh crore in 2020-21 and Rs 1.59 lakh crore in 2021-22 as back-to-back loans to meet a part of the shortfall in cess collection.
Over Rs 53,600 crore of GST compensation for the current fiscal is yet to be released to the states, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
States like West Bengal, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Mizoram and Nagaland did not pick a single penny from the Atmanirbhar Bharat scheme that could have brought Rs 2.14 lakh additional funds.
