The Lisa Torry Smith Act became law in September 2021, making it a crime to kill or injure a pedestrian, cyclist or other crosswalk user. Drivers who violate the law could face a Class C misdemeanor traffic violation to a state jail felony if the violation causes serious bodily injury.
A Texas school district said that the student’s hair, even when pinned, violated dress code. The district said the suspension did not violate a new law banning race-based hair discrimination.
An effort to educate the public about crosswalk safety laws in school zones begins today for the Fort Bend County District Attorney s Office.
The focus is enforcing and educating the public on the Lisa Torry Smith Act, commonly called the Crosswalk Law.
The jail has failed two inspections in the last year due to in-custody deaths, staffing issues, overcrowding of inmates, and holding inmates in excess of 48 hours through the booking process.
