Die 120 Helfer aus Niederösterreich waren am Donnerstagnachmittag mit 26 Rettungsbooten nach Belgien aufgebrochen und hatten nach der zwölfstündiger Fahrt Freitagfrüh ihren Hilfseinsatz begonnen. Ihre Aufgabe war es, zwischen eingestürzten Häusern, überfluteten Wohnungen und weggespülten Autos Überlebende zu finden und mit den Feuerwehrzillen aus dem Krisengebiet zu bringen.
