To a certain degree, while this is air and vladimir putin as you pointed out said he is not putting boots on the ground as of yet, it is a definitive move to them to say we re now the brokers of what s going to happen inside. it s not just about isis. it s about russia s power projection. i think it s a very important move that will cause some angst inside washington. we ve also learned from the state department russia has requested to u.s. aircraft stay out of syrian airspace during russian missions. with that in mind, and, again, knowing that this is russia flexing. can russia and the united states co-exist on the same battlefield with this approach? i think they can, but it certainly raises the tensions. i think there was a report that somebody in the white house, as yet undisclosed, gave a report that said, russia, okay, go at it. all right. steve, are you there? in terms of bombing isis ....
United states and russia in dealing with the assad regime, what this will mean now in that fight with the united states and with russia now involved? i think the big question, frances, at the moment is what is putin s intent, what is russia s intent with those 32 jets that it s got based at al asad international airport. which is just south of letika. the governor of letika is a supporter of assad. there were 32 jets last week that putin flew in to this airport to do something with. i think what we re seeing today are the first indications of putin s intent. now the big question is, who is putin targeting? is he targeting just the islamic state? or is he targeting anyone that is opposed to bashar al assad s regime. and from reports this morning, we re hearing that russian jets have been striking an area just ....
Just want to talk with these strikes now, is that leaving the door open or even cracked in any way to allow for ground troops down the road? that s the million dollar question at the moment. in 1998 putin and russia withdrew from afghanistan after an eight-year war and they lost 15,000 soldiers, spent billions of dollars and didn t really achieve anything. so my question at the moment is, is that will russia have learned from that. obviously you d have the demise of the soviet empire since that s occurred and russia is in a very different place. i think economically alone putin can t afford a long enduring ground war. i think the key question here is, what is the exit strategy? what is the exit strategy for u.s.-led coalition air strikes on syria? what would be the exit strategy for what putin s doing the a the moment with his air force? i think ground troops would be a very dangerous move. i think special forces activity is more likely. ....
