Jicama, dates, golden beets and sweet peppers. These are some of the snacks elementary students from 26 Corpus Christi ISD campuses have been receiving from the district s Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program this school year. Interim Food Service director Mary Boyd said the program is federally funded by the United States Department of Agriculture and provides snacks to students every Tuesday and Thursday. Only about 300 schools in Texas are in the program. CCISD campuses include Dr. J.A. Garcia, Stanley Kostoryz, Blanche Moore and Woodlawn elementary schools. The program is intended to provide access to students that don t always get exposure to different types of fruits and vegetables, Boyd said. ....
