Ramon Ramos Dr. Rainbow Savannah pediatrician dies parent choice vaccine

Beloved and sometimes controversial Savannah pediatrician Dr. Ramon Ramos died Friday at Memorial Health University Medical Center. A cause of death was not released. He was 70.
Ramos was born in Manhattan and obtained his medical degree from Escuela Medicina San Juan in Puerto Rico in 1980. After a residency, internship and a fellowship in Jacksonville and Augusta, he came to Savannah for fellowships at Memorial. Those were followed by a two-year stint in private practice in Puerto Rico after which he returned to Savannah in 1991to open a private practice here. He attracted legions of devoted families.
Parents like Megan Burns said Ramos, who was the father of seven, treated his patients as if they were his own. ....

COVID hospitalizations hit new record in Georgia

Georgia has set a new record for the number of people hospitalized for COVID on a single day.
The total reached 3,221 â surpassing the previous peak, 3,200, set in July â according to state Department of Public Health figures released Wednesday.
Northside Hospital told GHN that its hospitals âhave matched the spike we saw in July,ââ but added that COVID-19 patients still constitute less than 25 percent of its overall hospital patient population.
Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta said it had 70 COVID patients Wednesday, up from 63 on Tuesday and the low to mid-60s last week.
Meanwhile, the stateâs overall count of new infections reported Wednesday hit 6,869 (including people testing positive on rapid antigen tests), continuing a streak of high numbers of cases reported daily in the post-Thanksgiving surge. ....

A Fort Wayne woman who admitted she fatally stabbed her mother a year ago was sentenced Monday to 16 years in prison.
Raina Swopshire, also known as Kennishewa Whitley, pleaded guilty in September to voluntary manslaughter.
Swopshire, 25, was to stand trial in late October on a murder charge. She pleaded guilty to a lesser charge as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors. The murder charge was dismissed as part of the plea deal.
Had she been convicted of murder, she faced up to 65 years in prison. Allen Superior Judge David Zent imposed the 16-year sentence. Swopshire has spent more than a year in jail. ....
