Sea turtle hatchlings getting a helping hand with their perilous journey to the Gulf

Beach communities are getting ready to participate in one of nature’s yearly miracles that takes place from May 1 through Oct. 31 — the hatching of sea turtles and their struggle to survive the perilous trek to the sea.
According to Pinellas County’s Coastal Management Program, adult male turtles never leave the water, but to give birth female turtles come ashore in the dark, dig a hole using their flippers, and lay 100 to 150 eggs at a time. During the course of a season, a single female lays three to eight nests. After a 45- to 70-day gestation period, hatchlings emerge from the nest at night and attempt to follow the moonlight reflecting off the Gulf to get to sea. ....

Sea turtle-friendly lights installed in time for hatchling season on Treasure Island

Treasure Island installs sea turtle-friendly lights in time for hatchling season
Catherine Hawley reports
TREASURE ISLAND, Fla. - This weekend marks the start of sea turtle nesting season along the beaches in the Sunshine State.
Thanks to new lights being installed in Treasure Island, hatchlings should have an easier time finding their way around the beach in Pinellas County.
After hatching from their nests on the beach, sea turtles rely on moonlight to find their way to the water. Bright lights from beachside businesses, housing, and the street can disorient the baby turtles, causing them to crawl the wrong way. ....

Turtle lighting standard targets violators as well as owners

TREASURE ISLAND — The city has strengthened its coastal lighting standards to protect sea turtle hatchlings, by specifically going after the violator rather than just the property owner.
During a Feb. 16 City Commission meeting, City Manager Garry Brumback said the city worked rapidly to take action “that would enforce lighting standards and protect turtles.”
At an earlier workshop, Assistant Public Works Director Stacy Boyles told commissioners that over the past two years the city has had a high number of marine turtle disorientations, “and a lot of it is due to artificial lighting that can be seen from our beach.”
She advised the city will strengthen its ordinance though heightened and pinpointed enforcement of regulations that restrict artificial lighting from reaching the beach during nesting season. ....

Nurses working in Sturgis on the front lines of the pandemic

Sturgis Journal
When the U.S. began shutdowns on March 16, 2020, there were few confirmed cases of COVID-19 in St. Joseph County. For many, it took a while for the reality of the pandemic to set in.
For people who work in the health care field, the pandemic became front-and-center almost immediately.
Thurston Woods Village
Thurston Woods Village, like other elder-care facilities in the state, closed to visitors on March 10, 2020, in an attempt to keep residents safe. Nurses, staff and other essential workers carried on.
