New Covid-19 vaccine study for pregnant women launches


The UK’s first Covid-19 vaccine study for pregnant women is set to launch.
Around 235 women will be given the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine or a placebo in the study, which is taking place at 11 hospital sites in Newcastle, Leeds, London, Oxford, Gillingham, Edinburgh and Southampton.
More than 100,000 pregnant women have already been vaccinated in the US, mainly with mRNA vaccines including Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna, with no safety concerns.
For this reason, the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) in the UK has said it is preferable for pregnant women in the UK to be offered the Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna vaccines. ....

The first coronavirusvaccine study for women who are pregnant has been launched across a number of sites in the UK.
The study will look to understand the safety, tolerability and immunogenicity of the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 jab in women who are both pregnant and healthy.
Recruitment for the approximately 235 UK participants will begin this week, with the study taking place across eleven sites. These will include locations in Newcastle, Leeds, London, Oxford, Gillingham, Edinburgh and Southampton. ....
