Lords pass 'Spycops Bill' despite last-ditch bid to halt it

by Bethany Rielly
THE “Spycop” Bill passed through the House of Lords today despite a last-ditch bid to halt the “dangerous” legislation in its tracks.
A “fatal motion” tabled by Green peer Baroness Jones to prevent the Covert Human Intelligence and Resources (CHIS) Bill from passing was overwhelmingly rejected by 440 to 29 votes.
Under the proposed legislation, public authorities ranging from police and MI5 to the Environmental and Food Standards Agency will be able to authorise agents to commit crimes while undercover.
Submitting her motion, Baroness Jones said: “It’s a terrible piece of legislation and I cannot be complicit in it, nor in future acts of state oppression that will be the result of our passing it. ....

Another setback for Labour in Scotland
Submitted by martin on 19 January, 2021 - 6:05
Author: Dale Street
Richard Leonard resigned as Scottish Labour Party leader on 14 January, only four months after surviving a vote of no-confidence, and just four months before the next Holyrood (Scottish Parliament) election.
There are three (overlapping) versions of why he resigned.
Version one (
The Times): Labour Party donors, including William Haughey (West of Scotland businessman) and Robert Latham (who donated £100,000 to Starmer’s leadership campaign) threatened to withold funding unless Leonard stepped down.
Version two (LabourList): The balance of power shifted on the Scottish Labour Executive Committee (EC), with the GMB and a new Co-op representative saying that they would oppose Leonard in the event of a new no-confidence motion. ....

Children must be protected from being used as state informants, peers warn

Parliamentary reporter
TIGHT curbs must be put on a Bill to prevent vulnerable children and young people from being used as undercover agents by the state, peers urged today.
In its Covert Human Intelligence Sources Bill, the Home Office under Home Secretary Priti Patel is proposing that “criminal conduct authorisation” be granted to under-18s so that they can be used as a “covert human intelligence source.”
Some children and young adults are already being recruited back into criminal activity by the state as undercover operatives and informants, for example, youngsters who get caught by police for being involved in county-lines gangs. ....

Standing up to anti-communism in Poland and worldwide

ON DECEMBER 6 it was announced that Poland’s ruling Law and Justice Party (Prawo i Sprawiedliwosc PiS) Justice Minister and Public Prosecutor General Zbigniew Ziobro had filed for the Constitutional Court to ban the Communist Party of Poland (KPP).
Ziobro has justified his actions by saying the KPP “are campaigning directly for a revolution similar to the October Revolution in Russia, after which the Bolsheviks took power. The goal is not only to seize power, but also nationalisation and collectivisation through the use of force.”
On top of this he says that “the KPP’s programme expresses support for the political system of the Soviet Union,” and “communist criminals such as Joseph Stalin and Felix Dzerzhinsky are also glorified.” ....

Detectives 'not interested' in probing British army...

British army officers were ‘organising and running their own private war’ in Northern Ireland
Photo surveillance techniques used to gather intelligence on Soviet troop movements in East Germany were used by the army’s notorious Force Research Unit to help its agents monitor targets in Northern Ireland
A Royal Air Force (RAF) intelligence veteran has claimed that British detectives “weren’t interested” in hearing his evidence about the possible collusion of senior British army officers in murders in Northern Ireland.
Geoff Currums, a military surveillance specialist who retired as a squadron leader, spoke out after giving two interviews to police officers from Operation Kenova, which is investigating the activities of “Stakeknife”, the British army’s most senior spy inside the Irish Republican Army (IRA) during the Troubles in Northern Ireland. ....
