SWIMMING THROUGH TREES: Try hiking the Whiteface Mountain ski slide | News, Sports, Jobs

Whiteface Mountain slide (Provided photo Spencer Morrissey) The clouds were low and hopes were high as we set off for the summit of Whiteface Mountain. However, on this day we decided to try something different; we would summit using the slides at the ski area. We spotted a second car at the Atmospheric Science Research Center in Wilmington and returned to the ski area to approach our climb. Our first thought was to hike the Stag Brook Falls Trail but opted to use the ski trails as much as we could. We got a few odd looks as we passed by the many hanging around the lodge area, some of which were planning a day on slopes with their mountain bike, others just setting up for a scenic gondola ride.

SWIMMING THROUGH TREES: Take an adventure to Deer Brook Falls and beyond | News, Sports, Jobs

Deer Brook Falls (Photo provided0 Starting from state Route 73 at the Deer Brook Trail was as I remembered it, rocky with odd footing and slippery root systems. But it wasn’t long before I discovered that the trail had been rerouted. This probably happened a while back, but it has been a while since I wandered this trail. The trail crew had utilized the slopes on the south side of Deer Brook making it easier to enjoy the clear cascading, cool waters. However, there is something to be said about scrambling along the shore of the creek, over rocky outcroppings and splashing through random runoffs.

SWIMMING THROUGH TREES: Exploring Cat Mountain (2,257 feet) | News, Sports, Jobs

Cat Mountain summit (Provided photo) The trail for Cat Mountain starts out rather easily as it follows an old railroad grade for quite some distance. Only small gentle hills will bring you to the shore of Cranberry Lake. This is a great section for skiing as well as snowshoeing and hiking. You will make your way around Dead Creek Flow on an easy trail and soon come to a major intersection. Left will bring you to Janacks Landing (a nice location and worth checking out) and straight is to Cat Mountain. Be sure to sign in and out at this trail register as well.
