NYC School Chief Calls to End Competitive High School Entrance Exam Dominated by Asians
New York City should stop using standardized tests to determine who gets a seat in its prestigious specialized high schools, said New York City Schools Chancellor Meisha Ross-Porter, as the number of black and Hispanic students admitted to those schools dropped to new low this year.
Ross-Porter, who resumed office in February following former Chancellor Richard Carranza’s resignation, said it’s “unacceptable” that the competitive Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT) once again failed to produce results that reflect the demographics of the nation’s largest public school district. ....

On February 26, when former New York City schools chancellor Richard Carranza announced his resignation, the Asian-American parent groups who had been calling for his ouster for more than 18 months were wary celebrants. Carranza’s departure was a measure of vindication for these parents, who want the city to retain its current selective admissions systems for gifted children and for teenagers seeking entry into top public high schools. Carranza was determined to reduce what he called segregation in city schools and to create more opportunities for black and Hispanic students an effort, the parents understood, that would come at the expense of Asian-American students who worked hard to do well under the current system. STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. The New York City high school application deadline for the 2021-2022 school year is Monday.
To apply for high school, your child must be a current New York City resident (this includes students who have temporarily moved out of New York City during the COVID-19 pandemic), a current eighth-grade student, or a first-time ninth-grade student.
