MPs querying RCs, DCs military picks
THE tradition by Tanzanian presidents to appoint serving or retiring military personnel to civilian roles with political clout such as Regional Commissioners (RCs) and District Commissioner (DCs) yesterday caused a hot debate in Parliament with some questioning its rationale.
The matter arose as MPs debated the 2021/22 budget estimates of the Ministry of Defence and National Service tabled by the minister, Elias Kwandikwa.
It was raised by Esther Matiko (Special Seats-Chadema) who argued that appointing serving members of the Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF) was not well thought-out because such roles are partially political.
‘Dar port laxity causing losses’
13 MPs shelve Health ministry estimates to debate ‘go slow’ at the port
MEMBERS of Parliament yesterday called on the government to take action and end laxity at the port of Dar es Salaam after it emerged that operations at the facility had slowed down, occasioning huge losses.
This came after Mafinga Urban MP Cosato Chumi raised an argument of urgency, asking the House to suspend debate on estimates of the Ministry of Health and deliberate on the matter.
The move was supported by a number of lawmakers who stood up, reaching the required threshold and Deputy Speaker Tulia Ackson allowed the matter to be discussed.
