I am stan deaton with the Georgia Historical Society and we are pleased to partner with the uva club of savannah. This conversation, the last of three with esteemed faculty is part of the historical societies festival, its focused on the 75th anniversary of the beginning of the cold war. People have this idea of pumping as the sex pistols and as this British Working class phenomenon. And thats absolutely true. But in america, punk is much more has much less of a connection to a kind of vision of a sort of romanticization of a working life. It is much more about artistic freedom and artistic Self Determination and what we might think of more of as an avantgarde rebellion than a kind of class rebellion. Key figures are people like patty smith. The velvet underground, the ramons. These groups. And they create this vision of making your own music, outside the realm of the industry. Outside of the big companies. Outside you know, outside of television, for sure. You know, heaven forbid, we are not going to be on television. So that really flourishes in the 70s in new york. And by the late 70s this is what my most recent book is about, athens being a key, key site for this transformation. Young people decide in athens and then that becomes a model for other places.
