The government space agency had nothing to do with this mission s safety. we don t have a very big role here. this is space x s show and we re really happy for them. it is a milestone years in the making as the government s decades long monopoly on human space flight ends. this is the first time in human history that you can buy a ticket from a human company and fly to space. so this, i think, will mark an inflection point in human space flight. we will see a renaissance of people flying to space. and as more and more people fly to space, it is really fuelling the semantic debate over who should get to call themselves an astronaut in this new era of space tourism. the inspiration 4 crew certainly thinks they deserve that distinction. but because this spacecraft is totally autonomous and because on their official faa paperwork, they were listed as space flight participants and not crew, this crew may not get their official government issued commercial astronaut wings. ....

I assume there are good relations between nasa and richard branson s company, blue origin, and we know with elon musk, of course, because they are the principal funder and customer for spacex. reporter: yes, you re right, fareed. the faa highly involved in the laurchl here today. in fact, the whole reason that richard branson was able to board this flight, accelerate his timeline for his first space flight was because the faa granted virgin galactic an updated license for what they call space flight participants. the faa, virgin galactic in compliance with the faa working very closely on this launch as well as future launches. same thing with blue origin. also interesting to point out, the faa are focused on the safety of the people and the property here on the ground, but not actually the people in the spacecraft. so they actually sign a waiver, ....

From the kennedy space center. fareed, i want to point out that it is really, really important for viewers, people to understand that this is still a test flight. virgin galactic has not started their commercial operations. they don t intend to until the start of 2022. they plan to have two additional test flights following this one today. richard branson is flying as a mission specialist on board this flight this afternoon. there will be three other mission specialists with him. one of them will be conducting research, actually, on board the spaceship, testing a gene expression in plants during this sub suborbital trip. obviously there is a huge spectacle on the ground. there is music in the background, tons of people milling about. it is very important to remember this is still a test flight, and as a result, the company has taken extra precautions to ensure the safety of the space flight participants. they re all wearing parachutes. ....

They re going to be as safe as possible. so, how far off are we from an era of space tourism? virgin galactic expects to be doing commercial space flights next year. yeah, i think we re really close here. we ve had paying customers going to space on the russian soyuz to the international space station, we call them space flight participants. the russians did that years ago, and now we re seeing new era with nasa included with private astronaut missions, and now richard branson and jeff bezos have their spacecraft ready to go to take people. but it still you need a lot of money to do this. this is not a cheap enterprise. i think everyone in the business recognizes that the price is going to have to come down. at first it s going to be for the people who are wealthy who can afford this privately as space tourists or even as researchers or explorers, because i don t think they re just there for tourism. i think they re there to try to do this for a reason, as well. ....
