$3M+ WINDFALL: Major funding to overhaul failing sewer system

More than $2 million is set to be thrown behind slowing the Southern Downs’ plummet towards an “ageing infrastructure cliff”, starting with the region’s failing sewer system.
The overhaul would come as part of the latest round of Works for Queensland funding from the State Government, with Southern Downs Regional Council receiving $3,000,050 in total.
Councillors attended a special meeting on Wednesday morning to approve the list of potential projects they would submit to the Department of Local Government, Racing, and Multicultural Affairs by Friday.
Relining sewer mains across the region was given an estimated allocation of $1.3 million, with the council report stating it would “extend the life of the infrastructure (by) up to 50 years”. ....

DECADE'S PLANS: SDRC reveals water security strategy

Long-term water security and safeguarding the agricultural industry are among Southern Downs Regional Councilâs top environmental priorities for the next decade.
The council unveiled the draft 2021-31 Environmental Sustainability Strategy at its March 24 meeting, detailing an âaction planâ to protect the regionâs natural resources.
Valuing water, reducing emissions, building economic resistance, and protecting nature were named as the four main pillars of the strategy, with several smaller goals listed within each.
SDRC stated its own targets would include reducing drinking water use by 25 per cent by 2030, and giving half of the regionâs sportsgrounds access to recycled water for grounds maintenance. ....

Warwick braces for repair bill in wake of floods destruction

The potentially whopping repair costs of the widespread and damaging flooding that swept across Warwick and the Southern Downs last month are yet to be totalled.
Floodwaters inundated parts of the Rose City and wider region when more than 150mm battered the area in just two days in late March, with the Condamine River peaking at 6.66m by the third morning.
Condamine River is well over.
A Southern Downs Regional Council spokeswoman said council officers were still undertaking assessments across the region nearly two weeks after the weather event, and was unable to to confirm when residents could expect the repair bill. ....

Plans kickstart on new riverside glamping experience

A one-of-a-kind glamping experience will soon hit the Southern Downs, with a Severnlea tourist development the latest in a suite of new projects to be approved.
An application to establish the intimate guest operation at 199 Stabilies Rd was first brought up with Southern Downs Regional Council in January.
Gary Hayes and partners submitted the application on behalf of property owner Jo Sorbello, which proposed the construction of two glamping sites on the 5ha property backing onto the Severn River.
The two sites will house a maximum of four guests and span 240 sqm, and each tent will include ensuites, ceiling fans and fixed power. ....

One Warwick business has set their sights on expanding their longtime mechanics base after 30 years in the industry.
A 11a McEvoy St expansion application was submitted on behalf of Byrne Automotive to Southern Downs Regional Council last week.
The plan consists of expanding one of their existing sheds and creating a “low impact industry on both lots.”
According to the consulting surveyor Aaron Jamieson, the 73m2 extension towards the railway line would turn a current storage warehouse into an operational space for the business.
Mr Jamieson stressed the size of the development meant surrounding businesses would be relatively unaffected. ....
