BOROUGH joins RR exemption lawsuit

The Ketchikan Gateway Borough Assembly on Tuesday narrowly voted to commit resources to an ongoing lawsuit to keep the Tongass National Forest exempt from the 2001 federal Roadless Rule, a move that will put the borough at odds with local Alaska Native entities that are opposing the exemption.
The December case, filed by the Southeast Alaska Conservation Council, the Organized Village of Saxman, Ketchikan Indian Community and 19 other entities, alleges that federal agencies failed to follow procedures required by the Alaska National Interests Land Conservation Act and the National Environmental Policy Act.
Borough Attorney Glenn Brown during the meeting described the December case as another instance of litigation over the Roadless Rule and the Tongass National Forest, using the term âprocedural swashbucklingâ to characterize the ongoing legal disputes over the land. ....

Audit reveals Tongass timber sales mismanaged

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - An audit conducted by the Forest Service indicates that two large timber sales in the Tongass National Forest were mismanaged.
That s according to a release from the Southeast Alaska Conservation Council which says the audit was obtained via a lawsuit filed by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility and a Freedom of Information request it filed.
Sally Schlichting is a policy analyst for SEACC s Tongass Forest Program. She said it looks like the valuation was done incorrectly for both the Big Thorne and Kosciusko Island timber sales, And she said there are some issues with how the Good Neighbor authority sale on Kosciusko Island was being carried out. ....

An internal audit by the U.S. Forest Service says the federal agency mismanaged two timber sales. The report blames pressure to meet timber harvest targets. Mistakes meant $2 million less for habitat restoration work on the Tongass National Forest. Auditors also found the sales failed to outline planned restoration work and potentially violated conflict of interest rules among other findings.
The August 2020 internal agency audit found problems with oversight and administration of two large timber sales on the Tongass National Forest in Southeast Alaska. It only saw the light of day after Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility sued for it. Alaska-specific Roadless Rule to be revisited during the Biden administration

WASHINGTON D.C. (KINY) - President Biden, in an executive order, called for a revisit of several Trump-era rules including the Alaska-specific Roadless Rule.
Leah Donahey, with the Alaska Wilderness League, says President Biden issued an executive order calling for a revision of Trump-era rules at an online webinar called Blue Congress, Green Tongass.
He listed out several rules in Alaska that should be revisited and directed the Department of Agriculture to do that, Donahey said. It s pretty significant to have the Tongass National Forest on the list of things that they recognize need to be addressed.
