A MYSTERY that has baffled historians for centuries has been solved by a stroke of luck. The site of a medieval bishop s palace has been unearthed in Wiveliscombe during building work on a new bungalow. The discovery of the archaeologically important remains was made on land in Palace Gardens belonging to retired bank official Charles Pole. Until the find on a plot beside the churchyard wall, it had been believed the building, which dated from the 13th Century and was in ruins by the 18th Century, had been sited elsewhere. WORK is set to start soon to save a Neolithic site on the outskirts of Taunton dating back more than 5,000 years following years of neglect. Historic England has provided significant funding to Somerset West and Taunton Council for a programme of works to enhance the archaeology and ecology of a hillfort at Norton Fitzarren. Norton Hillfort, which acquired the site with Historic England cash in 2018, features important archaeological remains that require management to preserve and protect its ancient earthworks, enhance the site and ultimately remove it from Historic England’s Heritage at-risk register. The first phase to reverse years of neglect will start this winter with scrub clearance and tree management to open up the site for future use and to bring it back into good order. ....
