The latest series of Travel Guides has given the travel show a distinctly Kiwi twist, seeing ordinary New Zealanders take the country s top attractions for a road test.
Last night s episode saw the Travel Guides at the very southern tip of the Land of the Long White Cloud .
Southland is full of rugged coastlines and New Zealand s really wild places. More recently it has become a Mecca for motorists and bike enthusiasts. As the jumping-off point for Rakiura Stewart Island, a trip to Bluff and the Foveaux Strait is an experience every New Zealander needs to do – at least once. ....

Stewart Island riding domestic tourism wave

Stewart Island Backpackers co-manager Michaela Joy said – despite no international tourists – Stewart Island’s busy season started about three months early last year, in September, and it wasn’t quietening down.
“Since about September most of the island has been pretty full most nights. And we are already getting lots of bookings for the April school holidays and on random dates in April, which is quite unusual.”
She had been “terrified” at the hostel’s business prospects when Covid lockdown was enforced 10 months ago.
“We didn’t know if we would ever get business again, but it’s been the complete opposite, packed. ....

A guide to Rakiura National Park: When to go, where to stay and what to do

Why go:
Known as Te Punga o Te Waka a Maui (The Anchor Stone of Maui s Canoe) to Māori, remote Stewart Island is one of New Zealand s most interesting destinations. Around 400 locals call New Zealand s third-largest island home, laid-back Kiwis who share their southern abode with more than a few real-deal, feathered kiwi.
Rakiura National Park comprises more than 80 per cent of the island, and the park s Rakiura Track is an accessible way to explore a rugged environment of bush and beach infused with Māori heritage and more recent history.
Birdlife includes New Zealand s best opportunity to see kiwi in the wild, plenty of pelagic species including shags, petrels and albatrosses, and a tiny offshore island sanctuary soundtracked by the overlapping calls of many native birds. ....

Stewart Island/Rakiura: The island swarming with kiwi and Kiwis. You should join them

There are 33 times more kiwi (the bird) than Kiwis (the people) on this island.
There are very few places in the world right now where tourism is booming, but New Zealand’s “other” island is reaping the benefits of a trapped population.
Stewart Island/Rakiura is heaving with domestic visitors, one of the few “overseas” (or at least over the Foveaux Strait) destinations available until the bubbles open. The ferry across has been busier than ever, with bookings up 50 per cent over the July school holidays compared to last year, and they’ve stayed about 30 per cent higher than usual. ....
