week two, hen amin county medical examiner dr. andrew baker, who performed floyd s autopsy, is expected to testify in the next few days i want to bring in this morning nbc s shaquille brewster. he s in minneapolis. he s been covering this trial day in and day out. shaq, what are you watching for as the police chief takes the stand? i m really watching for, stephanie, what he says about derek chauvin s use of force. just to set it up a little bit, this is the police chief who fired the four officers involved in floyd s death within hours after that facebook video went viral. this is an officer who back in june told nbc news that he never wanted to mention derek chauvin by name and said he didn t even want to be in a room with ex-officer derek chauvin. this is also an officer who back in 2007 was one of four senior officers to sue the minneapolis police department alleged racial discrimination. so i m very curious how passionately he will speak against derek chauvin s use o

you also testified you participate and continued to participate in the training provided by mpd and is continued to be provided? yes, that s correct. is this training practical and useful? yes, it is. why do you say that? our officers are being particularly patrol officers are being called to, again, respond in a way in our community s needs and it s hundreds of thousands of calls they respond to. and we are a very interesting profession that in some professions your body of work matters and to an extent to the minneapolis police department, our body of work matters, but it s more internally. but to our communities for the most part, your body of work doesn t hold as much value. we don t have the luxury of being able to go up to a community member for the first time and say, you know, those 99 calls i was on before went really well. trust me on this one. we don t have the luxury of doing that. our communities are going, no, what have you done for me lately? this

Transcripts For MSNBC Katy Tur Reports 20240711

minneapolis police chief said the acts that chauvin took were totally unnecessary. the witnesses on the stand this morning was the doctor who pronounced george floyd dead at the hospital. was your leading theory of george floyd s cardiac arrest oxygen deficiency? that was one of the more likely possibilities. i felt that at the time, based on the information i had, it was more likely than the other possibilities. and, doctor, is there another name for death by oxygen deficiency. asphyxia. it s well known that any amount of time a patient spends in cardiac arrest without immediate cpr markedly decreases the chance of a good outcome. none of the officers on the scene performed cpr on george floyd. the doctor said he believed floyd s death was not likely from drug use but instead from suffocation or asphyxia. the defense team tried to combat that conclusion. so when someone ingests fentanyl, it can cause them to feel very sleepy because of an increased carbon dioxide
