No arrest, many questions, as family mourns Ocala man killed in crash

Quliptens Montgomery, 45, was killed late the night of June 25 near downtown Ocala. According to Ocala police, he was struck by a newer model Toyota while walking in the northbound lane in the 1000 block of South Pine Avenue. His body, under the vehicle, was dragged for blocks until it came free in front of the downtown post office. The driver left that scene and crashed at Southeast Broadway Street and Southwest Tuscawilla Avenue. The driver fled, and has not been found. How could you be so cruel? Montgomery s daughter asked during an interview with the Star-Banner. Authorities said the car, a 2021 Toyota Avalon, is in their possession. They are processing it for DNA and fingerprints.

New tourism and airport records set; Ocala/Marion needs more hotels

Marion County s economy, including its tourism industry, is not only rebounding from the year-long pandemic, it is reaching record-breaking new heights, according to county tourism and airport data. While area home sales continue to climb at breakneck speed, and commercial and residential development continues to explode, so are the indicators that Marion County is becoming more of a tourist destination than just a stopover. The Tourist Development Council (TDC) announced recently that it broke a record for the most monthly tourism tax revenue generated from short-term accommodations. There is 4% tax on daily room rates at hotels and other lodging throughout the county.
