The heart-stopping moment the officer trips and falls. the man with the machete standing right over him. other officers coming to his rescue, firing to stop the suspect. and abc s will carr with the images tonight, and we warn you, they are disturbing. reporter: tonight, a deadly confrontation in the heart of hollywood. units requesting a backup on mccadden just south of sunset on a 211 suspect armed with a machete. reporter: this dramatic cell phone video captures the moment police say a man armed with a machete carjacked someone in this chick-fil-a drive-through on sunset boulevard. oh, he got a machete. reporter: officers surround the car, then suddenly the suspect hits the gas, takes off and slams into two nearby police cars. he got stopped. reporter: another bystander captured the moment the suspect ran across the busy street, then onto the sidewalk, all while wielding that long machete. an officer pursues. the man with the machete then turns back and starts to chase ....

tyler breen. and, of course, the big question is why? why did he do it? sergeant mittsy fee arrow is with the lapd. she joins us now by phone. sergeant piaro, tell us how long the gunman was shooting before he was shot? it appears that the incident took approximately a little over five minutes from beginning to end. as can see in the video, tyler approached the intersection of sunset and vine armed with a handgun, started shooting at passing motorists, walked up and down the area of sunset and vine and then walks southbound down vine street where he shot a passenger sitting in his vehicle. and then again proceeded back toward the intersection of vine where he was excuse me. back toward the intersection of sunset where he was confronted by police, sunset on vine. at that are you there? yes. at that point, the police ordered him to drop his p weawe and he pointed his gun at the police. an officer-involved shooting then occurred. we re trying to piece together ....
