Judge Grants Restoration of Sanity, End of Supervision for Hatchet Killer

A Santa Barbara County Superior Court judge has granted a petition for restoration of sanity and freedom from supervision for a man who partially decapitated a Santa Maria resident on an early morning walk in 2009.
Nicholas Bendle, 31, who now lives in Northern California, filed a petition a year ago seeking to be restored to sanity and released from the outpatient supervision in place since he left Patton State Hospital in 2014.
In August 2009, Bendle, armed with a hatchet, randomly attacked a pedestrian walking on South Miller Street near Stowell Road, killing Frederick Holgate, 69, of Santa Maria.  ....

Update: Man who died in camper fire identified


Updated, 12:45 p.m. Saturday: WENATCHEE — A man who died in a camper fire on Dec. 7 has been identified as David L. Scott. 
Scott, 49, was identified with the use of a dental X-ray comparison, Chelan County Coroner Wayne Harris said in an email Saturday. Scott s family has been notified, Harris said.
The exact cause and manner of death are listed as pending until the results of toxicology testing return. That process could take two to three weeks, Harris said. 
An investigation into the fire is underway, but Wenatchee Police do not believe that there was a criminal element involved in the incident, Capt. Edgar Reinfeld said Saturday.  ....
