标准包括但不限于人均国民生产总值、工业化水平和生活品质。
OECD则用是否属于其下属发展援助委员会（Development Assistance Committee；简称DAC）来划分国家类型。该委员会负责协调向发展中国家提供的官方发展援助，现有30个成员（包括29个经合组织成员国和欧盟）。据悉，韩国从2010年1月1日开始获得该委员会正式会员资格，系日本之后亚洲的第2个加盟国。
世界银行则把全世界经济体划分为四个收入组别：高收入、中等偏上收入、中等偏下收入和低收入组别。世界银行官网显示，这些组别用于显示不同国家与地区在减少贫困、增长、增加人均收入等措施方面的表现，而人均国民总收入是衡量一个国家富裕程度及其在四个组别中所处位置的主要指标。目前，韩国属于高收入经济体。
另一项常被用来界定发达国家的指数是人类发展指数
