History Matters awards North Central College student with Judith Barlow Prize Gelaine Vestal Updated 4/29/2021 1:55 PM History Matters: Celebrating Women s Plays of the Past, a New York City nonprofit, has announced the winner for this year s Judith Barlow Prize. The annual prize is awarded to a student playwright for an exceptional one-act play inspired by the work of an historic female playwright. The first-place winner of the prize receives a $2,500 award and a reading of their work along with a $500 award to the participating professor. North Central College s Gelaine Vestal won for the student s play, The Shop, inspired by Sophie Treadwell s Machinal and sponsored by professor Laura Lodewyck. A reading will be scheduled and announced in the coming months. ....
March 6, 2021 At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, UAA cancelled all in-person and on-campus activities. One of the programs cancelled was the theatre department’s production of “Machinal”, only a month before opening night. Students wouldn’t be able to get back onto the stage until the start of fall semester. Instead of live performances, the productions for the 2020-2021 school year are entirely virtual, filmed and edited, viewed online. “Fuddy Meers”, a comedy about a woman named Claire who wakes up each morning with no memory, was the first production to be released virtually. It was available to purchase and view from Oct. 30-31-Nov. 1, 2020. The shows can only be made available for a limited time due to licensing restrictions and royalty fees. Dr. Brian Cook, Chair of UAA’s Department of Theatre & Dance, said that publishing companies would likely never have allowed the release of filmed versions of their plays in a world without COVID. ....

Forging ahead during the pandemic, they’ve to continue offering some of the year’s finest independent discoveries, with a new online platform, drive-ins, screenings at independent arthouses around the country, and more. Our 100 Most-Anticipated Films of 2021 January 8, 2021 After highlighting 40 films we can guarantee are worth seeing this year and films we hope will get U.S. distribution, it’s time we venture into the unknown. Due to all the pandemic-related delays, our most-anticipated list this year may ring familiar to those who follow our coverage, but there’s still plenty of currently under-the-radar movies that will hopefully make a mark in 2021.
