Streetcar that survived A-bomb gives kids virtual Hiroshima tour : The Asahi Shimbun

Streetcar No. 651, survivor of Hiroshima s atomic bombing, rumbled through the city s streets on a recent morning, taking elementary school students on a virtual tour.
The streetcar was running within 700 meters of the blast center of the atomic bomb that U.S. forces dropped on the city on Aug. 6, 1945. Though badly damaged by the blast, it still carries passengers in Hiroshima today after being repaired.
Their annual school trip to Hiroshima canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 157 sixth-graders at Asukano Elementary School in Ikoma, Nara Prefecture, watched the tour unfold as it streamed live on video over the internet on Feb. 16. ....

Film portrays life of A-bomb survivor who helped push treaty against nukes : The Asahi Shimbun


HIROSHIMA Setsuko Thurlow, a revered figure in the anti-nuclear movement, marked Jan. 22 with the release in Hiroshima of a documentary film about her life and news that the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons had taken effect, something she had long campaigned for.
The 89-year-old survivor of the atomic bombing of this western city who now lives in Canada is best known for her efforts on behalf of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear weapons (ICAN).
Another female expat from Hiroshima who lives in the United States helped make the movie, which is interspersed with episodes of her own family members, also hibakusha survivors. ....
