TAYLOR, Texas The humanitarian crisis at the border is prompting outrage from both sides of the political spectrum, while the federal government continues to fumble its response to the large number of unaccompanied minors at the border. That s the reason a coalition of migrant women rallied at the T. Don Hutto Residential Center in Taylor last week to send a message to the Biden Administration to begin the hard work of reuniting families.
One of those women is Sonia Almendarez. She’s originally from Honduras. She arrived in the U.S. years ago with her youngest son, but her two daughters stayed behind until earlier this year. ....

A mom just reunited with her 10-year-old daughter in Texas after 6 years apart - and their journey isn't over


She says they left Honduras because they had no other choice
Almendarez says she never expected to immigrate to the United States. When she was younger, she says someone offered her the opportunity, and she swiftly dismissed it.
But around six years ago, she says, everything changed for her family. That’s when her 18-year-old son was kidnapped and killed. That’s when she knew she had no choice but to flee.
“I never felt peace again,” she says.
Almendarez says she was so scared when she left Honduras that even the harrowing journey to the United States didn’t faze her. ....
