Petersburg VA to receive over $20 million in COVID relief funds

The city of Petersburg is slated to receive over $20 million from the Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Fund, a segment of the American Rescue Plan.
Following the announcement, Mayor Sam Parham says the city council is still in the midst of figuring out where the funds will go.
“We’re in the process of figuring out what the need is, and to make sure we have that money allotted for the correct uses,” said Parham.
Petersburg’s rich age impacts the slow update of various technology-based systems, said Parham. The city has been fortunate enough to see some advancements pushed by the COVID pandemic, such as the billing and collections system. Parham says he’s reliant on the funds propelling the city’s systems and operations even further. ....

Petersburg Public Library uses CARES ACT grant to fund technology bus

PETERSBURG In an effort to provide library services to Petersburg residents, Petersburg Public Library constructed its Tech Knowledge Bus on Thursday at Summit Pointe Apartments.
Similar to The Wave family engagement bus created by Petersburg City Public Schools, the library wanted to find a way to connect to its usual patrons while adhering to social distancing.
With the library being closed, we missed a lot of people, and a lot of people missed us, said Wayne Crocker, director of Petersburg Public Library.
Petersburg Public Library is one of 20 libraries in Virginia to receive a subgrant from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act. The library obtained $36,000, many of which were used to fund the tech bus. The library was also granted an additional $20,000 to pay for the driver, Crocker said. ....

PETERSBURG Patrick Ingram was scheduled to fly to London when the U.S. announced that it was shutting down the borders in response to the growing spread of what is now COVID-19.
The Center for Disease Control just declared the novel coronavirus, at the time, a pandemic just two days prior.
The flight to London was eerie, said Ingram. The Boeing 767-400 plane can seat over 300 passengers, but only eight were in attendance. The flight back to the states, however, was something out of a nightmare.
Upon entering the flight gate, the area was packed with people Ingram said, some of whom were coughing and feverish. On top of that, Ingram had to traverse it all with no personal protection equipment. ....
