Community Invited to Help Plan Sol Lain Playground Revamp Tonight | The Lo-Down : News from the Lower East Side

In October, Mayor de Blasio announced his Community Parks Initiative, a plan to spend $130 million to renovate small parks in low-income neighborhoods. Sol Lain Playground, at East Broadway and Henry streets, is one of three Lower East Side parks set for a face lift. Tonight, there’s a community visioning session scheduled in the Family Medical Care Center at 40 Montgomery St. It will be held from 6-8 p.m. $3.3 million has been allocated for the Sol Lain project. Sol Lain Playground Reopens on Monday (Updated) | The Lo-Down : News from the Lower East Side


Construction crews are busy putting the finishing touches on Sol Lain Playground. That’s because there will be an official reopening of the well-used public space Monday, after a $3.6 million renovation project.
There will be a community celebration and ribbon cutting Monday at 1 p.m. The rehabilitation, through the city’s Community Parks Initiative, included the creation of separate play areas for different age groups, swings, a spray shower, a high school-sized basketball court, an area for flag football and an educational garden for the local public school.
A nearby space, Henry M. Jackson Playground, was also recently renovated and reopened. Sol Lain Playground is located between East Broadway and Henry streets, at Gouverneur Street. ....

“More than 70 new seasonal recreational programming and maintenance staff will activate and improve parks in all Community Parks Initiative communities.”
“NYC  Parks will rebuild 35 community parks. Each of these capital – or major physical improvement – projects will be
developed with community input on the design principles and program. With your help, we will re-create the following community parks.”
“Parks will carry out many smaller-scale park improvement projects that can be completed on a faster schedule and bring immediate results to communities. Targeted improvement projects will happen throughout the Community Park Initiative zones, which are the areas that are shaded in gray on the map.” ....

Squadron: Park Equity Plan is Not a "Knuckle-headed" Idea | The Lo-Down : News from the Lower East Side

Last week, Michael Kimmelman of the New York Times was critical of a plan advanced by State Sen. Daniel Squadron to require wealthy park conservancies to contribute funds to needy parks. In arguing that Mayor de Blasio’s $130 million program to spruce up 35 small parks in low income neighborhoods is far too tepid, he said this of Squadron’s proposal:
…(De Blasio) still at least pretends to entertain the knuckle-headed demand of State Senator Daniel L. Squadron, a Democrat, that private park conservancies fork over money for public parks lacking patron saints. The idea put parks equity on the front burner. But it punishes successful, beloved parks; robs Peter to pay Paul; and flunks Philanthropy 101, alienating the more affluent New Yorkers the mayor needs to enlist. Never mind that few conservancies, Central Park’s aside, have much money to begin with or that the $44 million raised privately toward Central Park’s $57 million annual budget is $44 mi ....
