calls a contractor or plumber. how will it work in practice? people get it because they have plumbers and talk to them and know how much it costs. dana: people feel the regulations are worried that at what point has the government gotten involved and things work better? you will say $11 billion a year. dana: i m not so sure about that. jessica, it does feel pretty oppressive, i think. do you think that they understand that people are wore eft about it? i pride myself on my preparation for these shows. i did not call a plumber this morning. brian has the edge for me out there. i get why people feel this way that it is too much of the nanny state. i serve on a team that thought soda bans would resonate with people. a lot of people still mad about it. it would be good for our health if we had those kinds of restrictions. it is a wait and see with these things. it is always this could be
eating too many of the cookies in the vending machines. chocolate sandwich cookies, fruit-flavored candies, donuts and regular soda. that s a great breakfast. we are going to have a new standards for peanuts, popcorn, low-fat tortilla chips and low-calorie flavored water. but do we want government mandating what our kids are allowed to eat and not allowed to eat? or is that the parents job? some say this is a public school. from the health perspective, it would be nice to teach the young kids to eat well. so we are not paying later when they have problems that are stemming from obesity, but also at the same time, it s in the public school. they are eating it while at school, not while they are at home. it s not that they are banning this from kids bringing it in the brown bag from their parents. which they are not. they tried this with soda bans in schools.
21 without smoking, they re probably not going to start. so we think this could lead to a reduction in teen smoking between 18 to 20 by as much as 50% and even more importantly between 14 and 17 years old by as much as 70% because most of the people who buy cigarettes for underage kids are between 18 and 20. so i think we re going to get a double hit on this one. when you say teen, though, we re not talking 13. people believe the minute you re 18, you re an adult. there s people fighting for this country, raising their own kids. we re not talking 12, 13-year-olds. we re talking 18-year-olds. is this an example, some people say, of the government yet again from soda bans to transfat to whatever, telling us how to live our lives? and over a legal substance, by the way. duly noted. but we ve been working with the new york city health department.
