Watch now: Brutal conditions, but the cold helps artists hone their snow sculptures

LAKE GENEVA — The 10-degree temperature was ideal. The wind, not so much. Yes, the sun was out, but a steady 11-mph wind out of the west gusted to 21 mph, blasted across Geneva Lake and made the real-feel temperature fluctuate between minus 4 and minus 10 degrees. Wrigley Drive and Riviera Beach were welcoming on Friday for the third and detail-oriented day of the U.S. National Snow Sculpting Championship. It just required multiple layers, hand warmers and a good pair of insulated boots. Masks on this day pulled double duty, warding off the COVID-19 pandemic and frostbite. “It’s been brutal here today,” said Jim Malkowski, a sculptor from Milwaukee. “But we dress for it and we’re moving around. So it’s doable.”
