The annual Idaho Wine Competition is staged in the heart of the Snake River Valley by Great Northwest Wine as a collaborative effort with the Idaho Wine Commission.
This judging celebrates the best of the Idaho wine industry, and the panel is blend of winemakers, sommeliers, journalists, wine buyers and educators from throughout the country. “Any weird birds show up today?” I asked my wife as I dropped the kokanee in the sink after being successful at Ririe Reservoir.
“Nope – just the 10 flickers fighting over their food in the backyard,” she replied.
Early last fall, when there were a lot of Blue jays being sighted in the area, I decided to offer a lot of different foods – create a “bird restaurant” – to attempt to attract different birds into our yard. I did have a Blue jay show up for a couple of days, but we ended up with up to 12 Northern flickers making our backyard their winter home. It has been a very colorful experience.

That means there s nothing better than curling up in front of the fireplace under a warm blanket sipping on a hot beverage, and if you ve ever been to Potter Wines, that beverage might be a different kind of hot. spicy!
Potter Wines in Garden City got its start in an unusual way. In 2007, co-owner Von Potter decided to play around with something in his backyard.
Bitner Vineyards 2016 Petit Verdot/Merlot, Snake River Valley $40
While Syrah, Tempranillo and Malbec are rightfully viewed as the red varieties that producers in Idaho’s Snake River Valley are most bullish on, Petit Verdot recently became part of that discussion. In fact, a Petit Verdot was selected by a panel of judges from beyond the Gem State as the best red wine at the 2019 Idaho Wine Competition. Greg Koenig, the longtime winemaker for the Bitner family, uses the traditional Bordeaux blender as the lead 71% of this bottling. Both blocks were planted by Ron Bitner near the tasting room in 2002, and in the 2016 vintage, the Petit Verdot was allowed to hang until Nov. 4. A concentration of earth and
