India Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed thousands at state election rallies, and in person religious events returned, including Ramadan and Kumbh Mela, the latter an event only celebrated every 12 years. While COVID-19 cases in Memphis slightly dip, coronavirus cases in India have accelerated to frightening levels. Nearly 24 million COVID-19 cases plague India with close to 280,000 deaths reported Tuesday as of 5 p.m. by India s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. At least 7,266 Indians reside in Shelby County, according to the United States Census Bureau, and some have begun fundraisers, made social media calls and are shipping oxygen concentrators, an oxygen filtration machine, to help India s people. With the case count growing by more than 300,000 daily, people are scared. The situation in India is dire, said Manjit Kaur, chairman of the India Association of Memphis.
