Grants help keep breweries open and saves jobs, brewers say

West Michigan is celebrated nationally for its breweries.
From the lakeshore breweries that line the coast of Lake Michigan to the downtown breweries that have made Grand Rapids the self-proclaimed “Beer City USA,” breweries are a staple of West Michigan.
Last year was difficult for West Michigan breweries.
Two of them, Tibbs Brewing Co. in Kalamazoo and Craft Beer Cellar in Grand Rapids, closed permanently as the COVID-19 pandemic hurt them financially.
But state grants are helping keep other breweries open.
Osgood Brewing in Grandville has suffered from a lack of sales brought on by the pandemic, owner Ronald Denning said. The company received a $15,000 Michigan Economic Development Corp., a government agency that helps businesses grow through investment in businesses and communities. ....

Michigan is distributing money to businesses hurt by the latest COVID-19 partial shutdown.
It begs the question – should businesses that illegally stayed open or otherwise violated health orders still be eligible for the aid?
The latest $55 million small business grant initiative was approved by the Legislature in December, and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation is coordinating the program.
The MEDC is having 15 economic development organizations from across Michigan decide how to distribute the money to businesses in their respective regions. The application period for the Small Business Survival Grant Program ended last week and the 15 groups have until the end ....

MEDC introduces new grant program for small businesses

MICHIGAN The Michigan Strategic Fund approved two new grant programs to help meet the needs of small businesses and live entertainment venues impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The two programs, the Michigan Small Business Survival Grants and Michigan Stages Survival Grants, have a total of $58.5 million in relief funding available.
The Small Business Survival Grant Program will provide $55 million to small businesses with grants worth up to $20,000 each for businesses that are fully closed and up to $15,000 for businesses that have been partially closed or otherwise are open and can demonstrate an impact from the pandemic. ....
