this morning a new york times report reveals u.s. intelligence provided to ukrainian forces is helping them kill russian generals, according to senior american officials. ukrainian officials say they have killed roughly 12 generals on the front lines. the times report adding officials say the u.s. is not providing intelligence on the most senior russian leaders. a spokeswoman for the national security council provided a statement to nbc news in part, quote, the united states provided battlefield intelligence to help ukrainians defend their country. we do not provide intelligence with the intent to kill russian generals. moscow has also responded, saying it is, quote, well aware of the sharing of information and said nato and ukraine are not able to prevent russia from achieving its goals. meanwhile on the ground in ukraine, a final battle for mariupol is currently inside that steel plant with some civilians still stuck inside. tonight first lady jill biden begins her tr
it s just been remarkable across the country. interesting she mentions the material shortages, too. thanks for joining us. i m christine romans. i m laura jarrett. new day starts right now. good morning to viewers here in the united states and all around the world, it is monday, may 2nd. i m john berman with brianna keilar. happening now, the successful evacuation of at least some of the civilians trapped for months in the steel plant in mariupol. a plant that has become a last line of defense for ukraine in that city. about 100 civilians seeing sunlight essentially for the first time. they ve been trapped in a basement under ground. they got out, but others have not. overnight a ukrainian military commander said the shelling of the site resumed, hit, he said, by all kinds of weapons, hundreds still remain there. including innocent women, children, elderly who are running out of food, water and medicine. new satellite images exclusive to cnn show the plant, parts of it,
journey. nick paton walsh live in zaporizhzhia waiting, i guess. reporter: at this stage, we do not have evacuees from the azovstat plant. workers from red cross are coming here, where they would come in. you can see areas here being used over the past hours to welcome other evacuees from some, actually, the past days who have got out of mariupol are held in russian-held territory and slowly moved their way here. all eyes are on these two separate moves out of mariupol. i say two separate because we re talking about the steel plant where a cease-fire allowed the first batch of individuals to get out. i have to quote russian media here for some of the clearest numbers but their suggestion was that 46 got out in the first 24-hour-period. now, we ve seen another 80 in the second. the fate of those split, according to russian military defense, 11 choosing to stay in separatist territory, and 69 headed in this direction towards zaporizhzhia. they are not headed here, if we get a

a senior u.s. official tells cnn that russian forces are making incremental advances there. meantime, another mass grave was discovered friday in the kyiv suburb of bucha. 900 civilians have already been found dead in the kyiv region, in the wake of russian forces pulling out. russia s focus is now on the eastern donbas region. ukrainian president, volodymyr zelenskyy, says moscow s aim is to kill everyone living there. translator: only if ukraine would stand, will they live. if the russian invaders succeed in realizing their plan, at least in part, they will still have enough artillery and aircraft to destroy the entire donbas just as they destroyed mariupol. the city, which is one of the most developed in the region, is simply a russian concentration camp in the middle of ruins. the situation, also, growing evermore dire for mariupol s last defenders holed up in that steel plant along with hundreds of civilians. for more, let s turn to isa soares in lviv, ukraine.
