Facebook's bans on Australian news are like having 'part of our phone network down'

Melbourne University’s Dr Suelette Dreyfus says Facebook’s news bans are like having part of “our phone network down” because of the high level of dependence on the platform.

“They were appealing to their base of consumer to let them know what was coming own the pipeline but that is a very different thing from waking up in the morning and finding your Facebook feed is not what it once was,” she said.

“It’s akin to, in many ways, part of our phone network being down.

“We’ve come to depend on it for a communication tool but also for understanding what the news is”.

Dr Dreyfus told Sky News Facebook may have gained more public support if they had been more forthright early on that while the platform was free, the user was the product being sold.

“Access to you at a very specialised micro-targeted way was being sold to advertisers and Facebook has made a lot of money out of it as has Google,” she said.
