john berman will be joining you along with don lemon. captions by vitac www.vitac.com it is hard to say good evening tonight, having seen the video footage authorities in memphis made public just a short time ago. i m john berman here in new york. and in memphis, i m don lemon. we appreciate you joining us for our special coverage. today, tyre nichols mom asked me a very simple question about her son s deadly encounter with police three weeks ago this weekend as a matter of fact. that question was, where was the humanity? three days later, her son would be dead from the beating he d received. ten days after that, five cops, members of a specialized now deactivated so-called spcorpion unit, were fired. yesterday all five were charged with murder. and now we have video of what they did, john. and this video comes from a variety of sources, body cams, a pole-mounted surveillance camera. we re not going to show any of it lightly. in truth, though, there is no amo ....
we have new developments today both sheriff deputies taken off duty in addition to the five cops charged with murder in connection with tyre nichols s fatal encounter with police. with me now is the shelby county district attorney whose department is prosecuting these five cops. thank you for joining us. can you talk to us about your reaction to these sheriff s deputies now? i can t really speak about those details because there is an ongoing investigation and a pending prosecution. we know there were two deputies that came on the scene afterwards and they have been relieved of duty pending administrative investigation by the sheriff department. it is important to note that administrative investigation was entirely separate from any investigations that we are doing with the district attorney s office. why is a sheriff just now reviewing the video? the statement says having washed the videotape for the first time tonight i have concerns about the deputies who appeared ....
in memphis, slamone, what s happening a continued fall-out from this incident from the horrific beating after the video what public the sheriff here in the shelby county put out a statement learned two of his deputies were on scene that night and as a result of that because of this video becoming public, he s placed those deputies on leave, so it s two sheriffs deputies that are now on leave, and of course, you know, we re learning more between about this scorpion unit, the team that these officers were part of, the family calling for them to be disbanded well the mayor and police department here saying that that unit for right now is not operating in this city, they have sort of suspended their operations while they continue their investigation. but they re not outright going to say at this point that they re going to disband this unit, they re blaming the problems on these officers and not the unit, the other thing throughout this and of course, watching this video, ....
