Past practice to be followed in today’s Senate polls, says ECP Top Story Ag Agencies ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday said due to time constraints, the Senate election today (Wednesday) will be conducted “as per past practice” prescribed in the Constitution and law. The commission decided this in a meeting presided over by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja. ECP members Justice (retd) Altaf Ibrahim Qureshi, Justice (retd) Irshad Qasir, Shah Muhammad Jatoi and Nisar Ahmed Durrani attended the meeting. The decision came a day after the Supreme Court gave its opinion on a presidential reference requesting its perspective on whether or not open balloting could be held in today’s election. The court ruled that the Senate elections will be held via secret ballot according to Article 226 of the Constitution. It also suggested the ECP make use of technology to prevent corrupt practices. ....

PHOTO: FILE QUETTA: Former Awami National Party (ANP) Senator Sitara Ayaz, who recently joined the Balochistan Awami Party, withdrew her nomination papers on Tuesday for the March 3 Senate elections in favour of other BAP candidates. While speaking to the media alongside Chief Minister Jam Kamal and Parliamentary Secretary for Health Dr Rubaba Buledi, she said that it was an honour for her to be nominated by BAP for the Senate general seat. All the members of the party including the party president and Chief Minister Jam Kamal Khan honored me, she said, adding, I am withdrawing in favour of the candidates from Balochistan who want to contest in the Senate elections.” ....
