Growing marijuana outdoors is legal in California, but not in Siskiyou County
While cannabis is legal in California local officials are given plenty of leeway to set their own rules.
Outdoor cultivation is not allowed in Siskiyou County. In May, an emergency ordinance banned trucks carrying more than 100 gallons of water on certain roads, including those leading into the Mt. Shasta Vista subdivision near Big Springs where many of the Hmong grows are located.
LaRue said at a public hearing earlier this month that the ordinance has resulted in 25 misdemeanor cases. Each comes with a $100 fine.
“When we pull over a truck in the zone, we seize it as evidence,” he said. “We take it off the road. And it has been effective.”
YREKA, Ca. Hundreds of people gathered in the streets of Yreka this afternoon to demand justice for a man recently killed in an officer-involved shooting by police.
35-year-old Soobleej Kaub Hawj was shot dead by police on June 28th when evacuating from the Lava Fire.
“Siskiyou Hmong Americans United 4 Justice’ and Yreka community members came together for a justice vigil and march.
They claim Hawj was unjustly murdered.
“We are right now facing racism against our community, myself, I am Hmong, all our people here are Hmong people,” said national activist, Paula Yang.
She drove up from Fresno, California to demand transparency and an explanation for Hawj’s death.

The killing of a Hmong American man by state and Siskiyou County law enforcement officers during evacuations from the Lava Fire last month has led to mounting calls for an investigation into the man s death, attracting attention from politicians and activists from beyond the region.
Representatives of the local advocacy group Siskiyou Hmong Americans United 4 Justice said Friday they will be holding a vigil demanding justice for Soobleej Kaub Hawj, the 35-year-old farmer who was shot and killed by law enforcement officials on June 28 as he and his family fled the Lava Fire. Official accounts of the report claim Hawj brandished a gun, although activists say eyewitness reports contradict the law enforcement narrative.

YREKA, Calif. - Members of Siskiyou County s Hmong community rallied outside the Siskiyou County courthouse on Tuesday after a week that saw smoldering tensions between the Hmong and county authorities become animated by the Lava Fire.
The Mount Shasta Vista Subdvision, where many of the Hmong own property, was placed under an evacuation order on June 28 as the Lava Fire made a big push to the north. From the beginning, evacuation efforts in the subdivision went sour, as some of the residents distrustful of the fire crews and Sheriff s Office deputies insisted on staying behind to fight the fire.
