Division and intrigue has intensified among Bugisu political leaders over the pending gazettement of the new Umukukha.
This comes after the Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Mr Frank Tumwebaze, in his April 6 letter declined to gazette any of the parallel elected cultural leaders.
The cultural institution has been having wrangles between Mr Mike Mudoma from the Buyobo Clan and Mr John Wagabyalire Amuran from Halasi Clan in Sironko District, who both claimed the throne. ....

A section of leaders of Bamasaba Cultural Institution (Inzu Ya Masaba) have accused the Energy minister, Ms Mary Goretti Kitutu, of interfering with the gazettement process of the newly elected cultural head (Umukukha), Mr Mike Jude Mudoma.

Mr Richard Wambedde, the institution’s spokesperson, said Mr Wagabyalire was illegally elected.
Mr Mudoma and Mr Wagabyalire were both elected as successors by parallel organs of the institution in November and December, respectively.

The new Umukukha replaced the late Bob Mushikori, who died last month.
The first cultural leader, Mr Wilson Wamimbi, who was elected in 2010, came from the Wanaale family while the late Mushikori was from Mubuuya. ....

Background. The institution conducts rotational leadership among three families of Mwambu, Mubuuya, Wanaale and Babukusu of Kenya (Bamasaba of Kenya).
The descendants of Mwambu live in Sironko and Bulambuli districts, those of Mubuuya live in Manafwa, Bududa and Namisindwa, while those of Wanaale live in Mbale District.
