Oral histories capture sisters' memories before they're gone

Over the course of nearly six decades, I have known hundreds of sisters from attending Catholic schools to volunteering with religious communities.
The best way I found to really become acquainted with sisters, though, is by recording their personal oral histories.
As an inadvertent archivist without any formal training I d been tackling the reorganization of the Mission San Luis Rey archives in Oceanside, California, as a full-time volunteer from 2012 to 2013. I met members of the Sisters of St. Francis, Clinton, Iowa, who were ministering in San Diego, and was asked to lend my skills to their archives at the motherhouse. ....

Julie Gardner was about to hike the Grand Canyon for four days with friends when she got the call. Gardner’s son, a Cotter Schools football player, had dislocated his shoulder, and Cotter Schools President Sister Judith Schaefer was calling Gardner from Mayo Clinic.
Gardner said she would get the next flight home. Schaefer, whom community members fondly call Sister Judy, responded that she had the situation under control and Gardner should stay where she was. Schaefer then remained with Gardner’s son and kept Gardner updated on how he was doing into the wee hours of the morning. ....

COVID-19's toll:


Although the afternoon sun beamed, he appeared tired.
“The other night on one of the news channels, they said, ‘It’s only been eight months since we lost our first,’” said Chuck, 64. “I thought, ‘Yeah, tell me about it.’”
He used to walk the grounds of Mount Olivet Cemetery in Key West, Iowa, only periodically — to visit the gravesites of his parents, in-laws and niece.
As Chuck entered the golden years of his marriage, he could not have fathomed that his wife’s gravesite would be added to his solemn circuit.
Kathy Davis was two years Chuck’s junior. Newly retired, she looked forward to waking up in the morning and putting on cozy loungewear. ....
