There have been questions for a long time over what we can do, apart from combating extremism, to empower the minorities – mainly religious and sometimes also ethnic – in our country. Too often these groups have faced discrimination and terrible violence in various ways, simply because the majority community refuses to accept them as equal citizens of the country. Now there is a suggestion of how we can lead the way towards empowering minority groups and giving them more ability to fight for their own rights. Manisha Ropeta, a 26-year-old from Jacobabad, has become the first Hindu woman to pass the Sindh Public Service exam and be appointed DSP. She has explained that she chose the police force, after abandoning an earlier quest to become a doctor, because she wanted to do something ‘unusual’. ....

Nasir Shah terms federal govt's Sindh package 'eyewash'

KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Information and Local Government Syed Nasir Hussain Shah has termed Sindh development package announced by prime minister the other day in Sukkur an eyewash and added that all the projects, which are part of the package, are already included in federal budget that have been delayed due to non-allocation of funds.
The Provincial Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah stated this while addressing a press conference along with Sindh Education Minister Saeed Ghani on Saturday. PPP Karachi Division General Secretary Javed Nagori was also present.
The Minister added that Sukkur –Hyderabad Motorways Project was conceived under CPEC in previous government tenure, Gaaj Dam project was launched in 2013 while schemes of up-grading of passport offices and railway stations in Sindh were already included in federal budget book. ....

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah presided over an hours-long meeting of the provincial cabinet on Tuesday. The meeting discussed and took decisions on around two dozen agenda items, including taking up the census issue in parliament and the procurement of 250 diesel-electric hybrid buses for an intra-district operation.
They also decided to devolve the solid waste management board to divisional level, withdraw the condition of presenting Form VII to sell wheat to the food department, and file an appeal against the high court’s decision declaring regularisation of law and other officers of grades BS-16 and 17 illegal. The meeting started at 10am and concluded at 5pm. It was attended by provincial ministers, advisers, Chief Secretary Mumtaz Ali Shah and the other relevant secretaries. ....

KARACHI: While the federal and provincial anti-corruption agencies are investigating the alleged corruption of billions of rupees in various district finance offices (DAOs) working under the Sindh Finance Department, severe shortage of qualified officers has emerged in the department.
According to the official correspondence, copies of which are available with The News, Finance Secretary Syed Hassan Naqvi in his note for the Minister of the Department (Chief Minister Sindh) mentions that the district accounts offices of the province are facing acute shortage of accountants and audit officers of grade 17, as the positions were not filled through the Sindh Public Service Commission. ....
