Labour’s century-long hold on the authority looked vulnerable after the first day of counting, as they won 35 of the 80 seats declared yesterday. Counting will conclude today but Labour would have to have a phenomenal set of results to secure the 64 needed to stay in overall control, though no other party is in a position to take a majority. Liberal Democrat Councillor Amanda Hopgood, group leader of the main opposition, who kept her seat in Framwellgate and Newton Hall, said: “We are really grateful that people are giving us their confidence again and there was a strong turnout in many areas, which is a very good thing for democracy. ....
Sir Keir Starmer campaigned in County Durham this week, accompanied by Angela Rayner and Simon Henig, Labour leader for Durham County Council. In a tweet from Milburngate construction site, Starmer voiced his support for the Labour-led Council, which has been in the party’s control since 2010. The visit is part of a wider visit to the North-East in the hopes of maintaining support there, with the party leadership also campaigning in Hartlepool. “With the beautiful Cathedral and hills of County Durham in the background, today I saw the Milburngate development.” -Keir Starmer Sir Keir promoted Durham as an example of “the difference Labour makes in power”, and marked it as a herald of Labour’s plan for a greener energy sector: “Our focus is on jobs, jobs, jobs and that is why we put out an ambitious plan across the country for 400,000 jobs in low carbon and non-carbon environments, with an absolute emphasis on climate and sustainability.” ....
Mr Starmer was joined by Labour’s deputy leader and chairwoman, Angela Rayner and Durham County Council leader Simon Henig who were all shown around the site by Allan Cook, managing director of the developer Arlington. The Labour leader praised the vision of the developer and the council in bringing the project to the city, saying: “It is part of a very, very important jobs package, the council has got a real ambition of 30,000 jobs for County Durham and this is an integral part of that. “It is a good example of what a good council can do, working in partnership with others.” ....
