Centre Party calls for fewer refugees and less funding

Miðflokkurinn (the Centre Party) wants the justice minister to change the law on foreigners, providing less funding and reducing the time taken to process asylum applications. The party says that asylum applications have grown more numerous in Iceland while their number has been dropping elsewhere. “Why should people follow the rules if Iceland advertises itself as a country that ignores them?” the bill’s supporting document asks adding that strong welfare systems and open borders do not mix.
Ólafur Ísleifsson is the motion’s head signatory and writes that its aim is to “limit the treasury’s spending on foreigners’ affairs and increase the efficiency of case processing”. Miðflokkurinn wants decisions on whether each application warrants individualised processing to take no longer than two days.
